This Rolex Explorer II ref. 226570-0002 features a brushed stainless steel case and oyster bracelet. The hour hand is a mercedes logo and the minute hand resembles a sword, both crafted in white gold. The GMT hand (secondary universal time zone) is orange, all of which have blue chromalight and create a beautifully luminous display. The GMT hand can be adjusted for a dual time zone display with the date window at 3 o’clock.

Rolex introduced the Explorer II in 1971. This watch was not a successor of the Explorer 1016, but an additional timepiece with an additional function. The Explorer II was aimed at speleologists or cave explorers, who could lose sense of time during their work. The Type II came with the additional (24) hour hand, 24-hour scale bezel and a date. The Explorer II (like the I) is a chronometer, and the cases were designed to handle 100m water resistance. You only had to open a National Geographic Magazine of the 1970’s and you’d see an Explorer II ad inside.

In 2021, Rolex released a new reference succeeding the previous reference 216570, with a slightly redesigned 226570. The new 226570 features a more updated caliber 3285, which was first used in 2018 for the GMT-Mater II. This caliber is more robust and has several differences from its predecessor, including an enhanced 70-hour power reserve. Some of the subtle differences for the 226570 by design are the lugs which are now slightly thinner, which you can certainly feel whilst wearing this timepiece.

Unlike the previous 216570, the black dial for the new reference has white gold hands which were previously black all the way up for both the white and black dials.

In addition to the conventional hour, minute, and seconds hands, the caliber 3285 features a 24-hour hand to display a second time zone. For both the black and white dials, the GMT hour hand remains orange all the way up. This movement is fitted with a Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers, offering greater resistance to shocks and to extreme conditions. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 3285 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with all Oyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.
